Randomness of the day: Simpsons and Hitler baby.

without comments

Last night, my girlfriend and I were trying to remember all the Simpsons Mob quotes and as it turns out Frankie the Squealer and Johnny Tightlips are the two most genius characters EVER.  And so, I deliver quotes in droves.

Fat Tony: Did you have a nice flight, Johnny Tightlips?
Johnny Tightlips: I ain’t sayin’ nothin’.
Fat Tony: I understand. So how is your mother?
Johnny Tightlips: Whoa, hey, who says I have a mother?

Fat Tony: Johnny Tightlips, can you see the shooter?
Johnny Tightlips: I see a lot of things.
Fat Tony: You know, you could be a little more helpful.

Louie: Had enough, squealer?
Frankie The Squealer: Did you know Fat Tony’s real first name is Marion?
Legs: You just don’t learn, do you?

Fat Tony: Now some unpleasant news. I have learned that someone in this room is a squealer.
Legs: We’ve narrowed it down to either Johnny Tightlips or Frankie The Squealer.
Frankie The Squealer: Okay, it’s me! I can’t help it! I just like squealing! It makes me feel big!

Mafia Guy: Johnny Tight Lips where’d they hit ya?
Johnny Tight Lips: I ain’t sayin’ nothin’.
Mafia Guy: Then what do I tell the doctor?
Johnny Tight Lips: Tell him to suck a lemon.

Pure genius!

As for more random stuff, the parents of a baby in New Jersey were denied having a personalised birthday cake made for their son because his name is “Adolf Hitler”.  Uhhhh, pretty cool/weird.
They have a daughter called “Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie”.  Most hilarious/insane couple ever!  Story

Spiders

without comments

Oh how I hate them.

No, really.

Since we moved into a newly built house 8 months ago that had no actual stripping on the doors and wasn’t pesticide-d before we moved in, we usually have to deal with a lot of bugs such as cockroaches, ants and so on. Just before, I killed 6 big spiders. 4 different types. 2 deserved to have their own health bars. God damn them.

Happy Finnish Independence Day!

without comments

Today is Finnish Independence Day.
It has been 91 years since they gained official independence from Russia.

In honour of this, I shall listen to only Finnish music today (starting now), use Linux and eat cinnamon rolls.

Quick review: Songbird 1.0

without comments

Well, I tried this a while back when it was 0.9 or something like that. Didn’t really end up rating it and so went into my continuous spiral of trying to choose media organisation software.
Basically it went like this:
iTunes -> Winamp -> Mediamonkey -> Winamp -> iTunes

Somewhere in there was an afternoon of mucking around with Songbird.
Anyway, since I got my iPhone recently, I’ve gone back to iTunes. Now, iTunes of Vista32 is no fun at all really. Its clunky, the text keeps doubling and scrolling sometimes doesn’t work.

So, yesterday, my gReader gets filled with posts mostly saying “Songbird 1.0: out now”. And yes, they persuaded me to download it. Blah blah, I won’t keep rambling on.

Basically, its iTunes but lighter and with a browser and massive expansion capability. Firefox massive expansion. On installation, you get asked if you want to download the most popular add-ons of which there are 8 and 7 are completely crucial. Downloading them doesn’t take too long.
Upon running it for the first time I get a nice little prompt asking whether I would like it to import all my songs from iTunes and keep in sync with it. Damn good idea. I have about 8000 songs and 100 videos in my iTunes so I was expecting it to take a good portion of the day to import. 3 minutes later, it was all ready to go. Upon actual loading, you get greeted with the browser displaying their homepage so I decided to download a couple of extra add-ons. Lyricmaster, which automatically grabs lyrics for the song you’re listening to and then asks if you want to paste them into the metadata. Livetweeter which allows you to post a message and then the title/artists of what you are listening to into Twitter. Last.fm Album Art, which is SUPPOSED to display the album art but only displays the artist picture and I can’t seem to find an option to fix it.

Now, the main window allows you to have numerous display panes which display addons.
Songbird

As you can see, I have a whole bunch of addons running in the various display panes and down in the bottom right are Twitter and Last.FM connectivity icons. I should have mentioned that Last.fm functionality is built in.
Lyricmaster is prompting whether I want to save these lyrics to the metadata. Last.fm album art is FINALLY working. Very similar to iTunes in looks and of course highly functional. The grey empty space at the top is for browser tabs. On the left, with playlists and library options, there is an option for radio, which I have SHOUTcast installed, and bookmarks, which comes with a couple of useful ones to start off with.

Being a Mozilla product this is of course rather skinnable. But they aren’t called skins here, they are called ‘feathers’ which I think is painfully cute. The few I downloaded didn’t actually work with 1.0 but the skins look really quite nice.

Now for the bad stuff. Because there is a browser built in (or is it a media centre built around it??) and the constantly updating widgets, the memory footprint is bad. Like, twice that of iTunes. But, it does make sense. There are a few little errors that keep happening as well but that’s to be expected. It has a tiny bit of trouble with the start bar also.

Overall, its a great program. Faster than iTunes, highly customisable and gives you information on the fly.
No more having to jump across to Wiki to find info about a song you are listening to!

EDIT: Just tried it with my iPhone.  No compatability there just yet.  Hopefully very soon.

Australian Net Censorship

without comments

Now, I’m sure most people have either heard at least something about this ridiculous idea thought up by the Labor party.

Lets take you back to pre-election. Kevin07© mentioned some stuff about an opt-in filter. That was just peachy. It then slowly changed, once elected it became and opt-out situation. Ok, sure. You opt-out, get unrestricted access but have your name and IP(s) written down on a list stored with terrorists or something overly-dramatic. This opt-out filter then turned into opt-out of level 2 but get stuck with level 1. Basically, everyone is thrown into a highly censored internet environment which blocks out child-porn and “unwanted material”. Opt-out of this and get trapped in level 1. A filter designed to block “unwanted” material. This “unwanted” material will be decided up by the ACMA and probably a few ministers. This would include X-rated material such as legal porn. Due to the concerns of the other ministers it would probably also include gambling, Euthanasia, Anorexia, various political sites and anything to do with sex!
Hell, if Michael Atkinson got any sort of say in this, no gaming sites would be allowed.

But even if you ignore the stupid things I am saying, the filter is a disaster from page 1. In there attempt to block all illegal material, they would be greatly slowing everything down (as shown in various Government tests run since 2001!!) by nearly 70%. Not to mention the 2 – 3% of websites being accidentally blocked (I believe this ranges in the several hundred thousands of websites.)

Anyway, you all would have seen the stats so just sign this:

This hit over 55,000 signatures today!

EDIT: Here are some more sites for more information.

There’s also a whole host of Facebook groups/pages about this of course.
