Blog Wars: Day 2

without comments

After the last post I made, I have found out a few minor flaws in both WordPress and Blogger.

The kind of flaws that non-professional bloggers (like me) would get slightly annoyed about.

WordPress:

Certain themes can’t have their header text colour changed with or without a different image uploaded.

Keyboard shortcuts that navigate around normal text documents don’t particularly work well. They are on and off. A Mac thing I think.

Some widgets tend not to do what you tell them to do.

Can’t use HTML tags in ‘visual’ post mode.

Blogger:

The time isn’t consistent between the post and the RSS Feeds listed posting time. They are EXACTLY 30 minutes apart.

Some ‘page elements’ tend not to work in a proper fashion.

Can’t write pages.

Posting box still looks cheap.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Apart from these few annoyances, both are still very enjoyable to post with.

I spent a lot of time last night customising both pages but I found myself pretty much sticking to WordPress just because it feels less clunky despite its general look.

I’m trying not to pick a winner prematurely here, but WordPress just keeps calling to me.

Now, one thing I should explain better is what the ‘Knowledge’ criterion means.

It involves how obvious the bloggers information can be displayed to the reader. The ‘About Me’ type information appears well in both WordPress and Blogger. Really easy to access. But there is a Blogger ‘page element’ that allows the ‘About Me’ information to appear on the blog instead of the reader having to click another link.

A nice touch. But what if you want certain Web 2.0 widgets displayed, such as Last.fm, Twitter, Facebook cards and so on. Both services offer links widgets which can link the reader to each of the bloggers specified Web 2.0 sites but if you want to display their widgets, WordPress allows you to create page and have a link to that. I would have to say that I like the WordPress way better.

One thing I am noticing at the moment (I’m writing this time on the WordPress ‘poster’) is that it tends to do some odd things. The spacing seems to much, one return sometimes seems like two, some spaces are added by themselves and other little inconveniences like that. Its actually starting to annoy me but this is probably another Mac Firefox issue. To truly test how both services work with Mac, I shall use Safari and Camino with both services.

I’m yet to attempt the uploading tools. So lets try a 800 x 600 picture.

Call Of Duty 4 800 x 600 test

Now let me tell you how it went.

The WordPress upload took a bit longer than the Blogger one but it appeared where I told it to. With Blogger, it went to the very top of the post and moving it down is not fun. A lot of clicking and dragging there.

With WordPress once the picture is uploaded, you get to pick how it is displayed. I.e. full size, thumbnail or just the title with the link to it. You can also tell it where to link which is either the file, a page or nothing. With Blogger it asks before you tell it to upload, this is obviously a storage limit saver. You also get to pick the alignment of the image. You also have the option of saving an image across from another URL so you don’t steal their bandwidth. Another nice touch by Blogger. You can also upload multiple images at a time with Blogger. Yet another nice touch that would be brilliant in WordPress.

One thing I can’t find with Blogger is how to place an already uploaded image in a post. WordPress has a browser just below the posting box.

One thing I should find is a full size WordPress theme so this picture test isn’t so unjust.

Thats enough for this installment. Time to tag and finish.
