without comments

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is to be released in 10 days!

Rather sudden but the online Apple store did kinda play around last night saying when the pre-orders would be shipped out.

Anyway, 10 days until I can have stacks in the Dock!!

Welcome

This is the Blogger vs. WordPress test.
Over the next few days I shall be testing each one to see which is better.

There is a points scheme. I.e. which ever service out does the other shall be rewarded the point.
Setting-up
Customisation
Ease of posting
Knowledge
Maintenance
Widgets/Extras
RSS: Out & In
Dashboard Quality
Tagging
Commenting
Offline client?
Firefox plug-in friendly
Mac Friendly

These are the things that will determine the winner.

Setting up both was kind of interesting. They both had a very similar process, but all blogging sites seem to use the same one. The colours actually played a factor in this one. The Blogger colours are pretty obvious so finding your way around is dead easy and pretty much obvious. With WordPress, I had a tad bit of trouble because of all the light blues/blues and light blues/whites. Not the best colour scheme I might say. Still, fairly simple.

One thing that I think Blogger did better in was the fact that part of their set-up process includes the change of the blog template. The WordPress process did not and involved a little bit of rummaging around. The templates offered by both were very different. The WordPress ones seemed somewhat more ‘designer’ than the Blogger ones but the Blogger ones DID have their charm. Also there were quite a few more WordPress ones offered.
But thats it, you can’t add any more and you can’t customise them for the public to see, you have to pay for that. Blogger, upon hearing the word ‘pay’, caught back up. The Blogger templates are allowed to be modified, freely, and 3rd party ones can be added.

Posting on both Blogger and WordPress is excellent. The WordPress one looks a tad clunky but that is because it offers a ton more options while you are posting. Both of course offer a Rich Text Editor and a code one. I’ll be trying them out later.
Bit of a coding glitch on the WordPress one I just discovered on the feature that I personally thought was really good. The word count. I pasted in some text but the word count did not change.
The WordPress ‘poster’ does redeem itself fully though by having so many options at hand as well as an uploader that takes jpg, gif, png, pdf, doc and ppt. It also has a way to easily upload YouTube and Google Videos. Also some weird slideshow uploader. I’ll have to give the whole lot a go next time round.
WordPress of course shoots itself in the foot by offering a mere 50 MB upload limit.
Blogger, I think, offers around the 300 MB mark.
Despite the upload space difference, I think WordPress shall win this round.

Oh wait, after some more exploring, I have discovered that Blogger to allows you to upload stuff on the fly. Tiny buttons were my gateway into this discovery. It allows you to actually upload video. Nice touch.
The image and video features will be debated later on.

As I draw near the end of this first installment of Blog Wars, I bring my attention to the tagging options within the ‘poster’. Blogger doesn’t use tags, it uses ‘labels’. I assume they are exactly the same as tags. WordPress uses tags but also has categories which I assume categorise posts. A rather nice feature in my opinion.

Anyways, that ends the first part of this “Blog Wars”. Let us see how each one turns out.
